Description
If you’re about to plug in and power up your newly acquired device such as a guitar amp, stereo receiver or radio etc and you don’t know its condition and then start thinking “What if there’s a short circuit or bad part in the device” and you don’t have a Variac (autotransformer), volt meter and an amp meter there is an easier and time saving way by using a Dim Bulb Tester. A Dim Bulb Tester is a low-tech way of adding an automatic self-adjusting current limiter and visual indicator to protect your device from short circuit damage, the Dim Bulb Tester is not a total replacement for the Variac and meter but it saves time and is quickly used when powering up a device.
Here is how to use one, install an incandescent bulb into the porcelain lamp base with the wattage depending on the power consumption of the device you’re powering up but in most cases a 100 watt bulb will work fine or check the net for suggestions for the device you are powering up, next plug in the device line cord into the outlet of the Dim Bulb Tester and insure that the device and switch on the Dim Bulb Tester are in the off position, next plug in the Dim Bulb Tester line cord into a live wall outlet, now turn on the device and then switch on the Dim Bulb Tester, a red neon pilot light will glow when the switch is in the on position.
If the device has no short the bulb should flash on bright and then dim out almost completely within 2 seconds but it will glow dimly, if you have no short you may now plug in the device directly into the wall.
If the device has a short the bulb will immediately come on bright and will NOT dim out. Do Not leave the device powered up in this mode for long because something is going to burn up, place the switch in the off position! Do Not plug the device directly into the wall, something is shorted and needs attention before the device is used.

1 Eaton Commercial 15-Amp Duplex Outlet/Switch with a red neon pilot light that glows
red when the switch is in the on position and tamper-resistant shudders on the outlet.
1 Eaton 660 Watt porcelain lamp base.
1 Carlon 1 gang heavy-duty gray plastic electrical box and cover
1 Power cord 18 gauge 42 plus inches secured with 1 cable clamp and 9/16” T25 staples
4 Rubber feet with built-in metal washer.
All parts are mounted to a 6” x 11” piece of ¾” oak plywood with routed edges using 1’,
3/4” and ½” screws, the plywood is painted polished silver using Valspar StormCoat
exterior semigloss paint. Wire connections under the lamp base are soldered and sealed
with heat shrink tubing.

Concerning the description of the item, Most of the items I list are used and I try my best to describe the item including any cosmetic and performance flaws, but I could miss something that is important to you and they say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so that’s why I list the item with a lot of photos, so please take the time to let them all load and study them carefully before placing a bid, also if you have a concern about a performance issue that I didn’t address, just ask, in most cases you’ll have your answer within a couple of hours (Between the hours of 9am to 9pm EST) This way you can avoid any buyer’s remorse and bad feelings about the transaction. I want you to be satisfied with your purchase and will do my best to make that happen.
Please note that in most cases any electronic items such as stereo receivers, cassette decks, etc will be opened up and checked for any foreign objects like paper clips, coins, etc that could cause a problem down the road. All of the internal parts will then be cleaned with compressed air to remove dust etc and then all potentiometers and switches etc are cleaned using an electronic cleaner such as DeoxIT to remove any static or scratchiness in the potentiometers and switches, also if any of the electronic items contain audio or video magnetic heads they will be cleaned with Denatured Alcohol and degaussed (Demagnetized). I then assemble the item and test all functions that the item should perform, If for any reason I cannot clean or test the item as explained it will be stated in the description of the item.
If the item listed contains vacuum tubes they will be tested using a calibrated Sencore TC 142 Tube Checker that performs the following tests.
1.Check emissions at full rated cathode current.
2.100 megohms grid leakage test.
3.“Stethoscopic” shorts test.
4.“FILAMENT SENSITIVITY” also known as a “LIFE TEST” When I test the tube for emission, and it reads in the GOOD area of the meter I switch the Filament switch DOWN one step (i.e. 6V to 4.5V). A good tube will not budge the meter needle one iota, but a filament sensitive tube will cause the meter reading to drop off quickly. If the meter reading falls off but still remains in the GOOD area, the tube is still acceptable, but once the meter reading hits the question mark (?) or BAD area, this tube should be replaced. I will inform you in the description of the item if any tube fails the LIFE TEST and will need to be replaced in the future. Performing and passing a LIFE TEST will give you double insurance that the tube will work in the circuit.
Due to past experiences with dishonest buyers some items will have a Numbered Security Label attached to the item, if this label is tampered with in anyway there will be absolutely No Refunds. The Security Label number will be seen in a photo of the item or stated in the listing or both.
