    Description

Here is a Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica Chocolate Cup with Saucer, Number 20/3512.
This piece is traditionally considered a chocolate cup, but could serve very nicely as a small coffee cup. It is much larger than a demitasse or espresso cup. This is an exquisite, rare piece in mint, unused condition. It is a factory first, made in 1960-61.
For over two centuries, Royal Copenhagen's Flora Danica has remained one of the world’s most prestigious and luxurious porcelain collections. The name Flora Danica comes from the eponymous 1761-1883 atlas of botany, the exhaustive encyclopedia of the plant species ('Flora') native to the then Kingdom of Denmark. This botanical work comprises 51 volumes and 3,060 colored copper prints depicting, in minute detail, the plants of Denmark. Beginning in the late 18th century and continuing today, the most skilled painters at Royal Copenhagen have transcribed these botanical details to a fine porcelain canvas in order to create the Flora Danica collection.
King Christian VII of Denmark commissioned the first Flora Danica dinner service as a gift for Empress Catherine II of Russia in 1790. Each piece of Flora Danica since has been made to order. Each piece is unique, reflecting the buyer's choice from over 3,000 flower and plant motifs, and the painter's artistic expression.
The cup has a striking pointed handle, and carries a lovely depiction of the 'Erica Tetralix L.' flower. The cup has a 2 3/4 inch diameter and is 2 9/16 inches tall. On the back of the cup is the painter's meticulous latin script, along with the Royal Copenhagen markings and the signatures of the painter and gilder. The cup has no apparent flaws.
The saucer has a 5 5/8 inch diameter and a 1 1/8 inch height. It appears flawless to me. Overall, the cup and saucer set is in mint condition and appear unused. There are no cracks, chips or scratches.
This set is a work of art. I invite you to do some research on Flora Danica, and to take advantage of this opportunity to buy this stunning and rare piece at a very attractive price.
