    Description

Please read the seller terms at the bottom of the page, view the pictures and ask questions before bidding:,
Offered for sale is a fine vintage example of Royal Copenhagen porcelain called Flora Danica.  This plate part of a service originally intended to be a gift for the Danish to the Russian Tsarina Catherine II, was ordered in 1790, but Catharine II never received it as she died in 1796. The crown prince renewed the order and the set was delivered in 1802.  It was never quite complete though, because production had been discontinued by order of the king.  Johann Christoph Bayer and his staff modeled and cut out every piece by hand, making every part a work of art in itself.  The vast Danish botanical work Flora Danica, begun in 1761, consists of 3,240 engravings in folio of all the wild plants that grew in the kingdom of Denmark.  Flora Danica is considered the most distinguished and costly dinner service in the world.  From the finest preparation of the raw porcelain mass to the painting of the edges by the gold decorator with 24 carat gold.  While the porcelain is still soft, the edges and perforations are cut out by hand, the painters choosing their motifs from the original designs.  The flowers are painted with great care, each colour fired before the next colour can be added.
This 9 inch desert plate signed by Royal Copenhagen and the artist is decorated with the flower, Latin name,
    Saxifraga hypnoides
, and by its mark, and number 20/3554, and artist signature ?, 23 predates to 1922, and after 1889.  It is an estate find, and probably is from around the first decade of the century.  It is of beautiful quality, the flower, extending more easily around the surface than some of the later examples.  It has a pierced border, gilt decoration, and the photos show the rest.  This plate has a small chip on the rim as shown, and can be repaired if desired.  Please look at them carefully before bidding.
